Local Athletes On Collegiate Squads


A number of local athletes are competing in intercollegiate athletic programs around the country. Former SLVHS soccer stars Caitlin Meadows and Maria Esquivias are playing Diviision I soccer on opposite coasts.

Brookdale’s Caitlin Meadows has been a started 60 straight games at midfielder for the women’s soccer team at Long Island University in Brooklyn NY. She was named to the Northeast Conference All-Tournament team in 2009 as well as to the NEC Academic Honor Roll. The Blackbirds just returned to the east coast from Honolulu where they split a pair of matches losing to Cal Poly and defeating the University Of Hawaii.

Boulder Creek’s Maria Esquivias has played in all three of San Jose States’ close 1-2 losses vs Santa Clara, USF and a double overtime heartbreaker to Sacramento State. The Spartans travel to San Luis Obispo on Friday and return to face Cal State Bakersfield at Spartan Stadium on sunday at 1PM.

And from Ben Lomond, five members of the SLVHS class of 2007 are competing for their schools in football and soccer:

Taylor West returns to Southeastern Missouri for his senior season with the Red Hawks who will play Ball State on Saturday. Last year West played in ten games earning a starting roll in three. He recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the season opener, a 72-3 win over Quincy St. The following week he had 4 tackles in a 70-2 loss to Cincinnatti.

Nick Johnson began his first season at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia Arkansas with three catches for 22 yards in his teams 44-13 win over Southeastern Oklahoma. The offensive coordinator for the Reddies is former Cabrillo assistant and SLV QB Mike Volarvich.

Danny Adamson, expects to improve on the four goals he scored last year for Cabrillo. The Seahawks lost their opener 1-0 to Santa Rosa They host Canada on Tuesday night at 7PM.

Kellen Coffis expects to play a major role in midfield for the Notre Dame de Namur men’s soccer team. He started all 19 games and led the team in minutes played last season as the Argos finished second in the Pacific West Conference. Their 2010 seasons begins Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona and Saturday at UC San Diego. The Argonauts play their home opener on Sept 12 at 11:30 at Koret Field in Belmont.

Forward Gabriel Cassaro will lead the Bethany University Men’s soccer team when they open their season at Skypark on Saturday at 1PM vs SF Academy of Art University. Cassaro was among the leading scorers in the California Pacific Conference last season.
