SC Sentinel Owners Continue "Streamlining"

According to the San Jose Mercury News: "The Bay Area News Group announced Thursday that its newspapers will now operate under a single, common news management team under the direction of David J. Butler, editor of the San Jose Mercury News and vice president for news for its parent, MediaNews Group."

Merc publisher Mac Tully in an email sent to staff said:

"Beginning today, we are taking another significant step in streamlining our organization to maximize our operating efficiency. Continuing the process that began with the creation of the Bay Area News Group, the news divisions of all BANG newspapers will now operate under a single, common management team under the direction of Dave Butler."

There are a number of separate papers in the group from the Contra Costa Times to the Santa Cruz Sentinel .  Beginning in January the Santa Cruz Sentinel began calling itself an edition of the San Jose Mercury on their masthead.  How many layoffs this latest consolidation will create was not disclosed however senior editors at the Contra Costa Times were reported to be out according to a local Patch story on the subject.
