Scotts Valley Mayor Jim Reed is calling for the closure of the Boulder Creek and Felton Libraries as well as branches on the east and west side of Santa Cruz at the same time he is spearheading the construction of a larger branch in Scotts Valley.

“The lowest-circulating libraries are the least cost-effective. The smaller branches are closed a lot, but there are still building costs, regardless of how little a branch is open,” Reed is quoted in the Press Banner.

Reed went on to say he would like to see the smaller branches converted into independent volunteer community centers that would provide basic library services.

Scotts Valley will be using Redevelopment Agency funds to remodel a former skating rink to house an expanded Scotts Valley branch.

The Scotts Valley Mayor, who is up for re-election to the City Council in November, is a member of the Library Joint Powers Board along with County Supervisor Mark Stone. Stone is on record supporting keeping the local branches open.
